While we cover so many school sports on our website and in our yearbook, so many of our students do extracurricular sports that aren’t connected to the school.
Rowing has become a popular sport that many people from our school and schools around us are participating in. One person who has recently joined the Everett rowing team this spring is Allison Skoog. “I have always been interested in rowing but until this year I never did anything about it, but my parents were the ones who convinced me to do it so once I saw the community, the drive these girls have and the competition, I knew it would be fun,” Skoog said.
Rowing is quite different from regular school sports because of the extensive amount of equipment and funds that go into it. As well as having a sufficient place to practice. “We bring our oars down; we bring the launches down and then we look on the board for not only what boat you are in but also what type of boat you are in,” Skoog said.
Gymnastics is another sport that students like Izzy Miller participate in. “I started gymnastics when I was two, doing “Mommy and Me” classes every day. I loved learning new skills and joined the competition when I was nine. My favorite event has been vault because it was the event I got the highest score in and with the help of my coaches throughout the years, I was able to go to state competitions and place on vault,” Miller said.
Even though she loved gymnastics, Miller decided to quit to pursue other passions but is still finding a way to be a part of the experience for other people. “Even if I’m not competing anymore, I’m still at the gym daily coaching and hoping to help the kids that I coach fall in love with gymnastics the same way I did when I was younger,” Miller said.
Along with rowing and gymnastics, there are many other extracurricular activities that students do that aren’t connected to GP. Things like dance, hockey and figure skating as well as all the club sports like diving, soccer, softball, etc. that students participate in to practice for the high school seasons.
