Tech Week = Hard Week
April 9, 2018
Although many thespians refer to this week as “hell week,” some argue that it’s not as bad as it seems. Tech week for our school’s spring musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, began Monday, April 9. Tech week is usually a series of waiting, pausing, holding, and stopping. It consists of the directors and stage crew making sure lighting is correct, sound is on point, and the set looks good. The cast usually says a few lines, until they are interrupted with a loud “HOLD” yelled from the audience by the director. When this happens, the cast pauses where they are at, so the crew can adjust the lighting and sound.
“Tech week can be really stressful, I’ll admit. But it’s nothing we can’t take on,” senior Erica Lane said. “This being my first musical at GP, and I knew being in the musical would be hard work. But I was told that all the hard work we do definitely pays off. And now that I’m in tech week, that’s proving to be true. It’s stressful with everything going on right now, but I know by opening night all that will fade away and we will be so proud of the time and effort we all put in.” Lane plays a Congregation member in the musical.
Daniel Geiszler, who plays Quasimodo (the “Hunchback”) described tech week. “The most stressful thing is realizing how close you are to opening night and having so many things to do, but it’s always encouraging when the cast and crew work together to get it all done, and being able to watch it all happen,” Geiszler said.
