Lacrosse has been a club sport associated with GP for a few years however the players think it should be a school sport not just a club sport. Glacier Peak Lacrosse started in 2017 as a club not affiliated with the high school. “We wear GP on our uniforms and helmets, and we get more GP student fans then other sports,” Tanner Johnson said. Despite using GP facilities and having GP on their jerseys and helmets they are only a club sport and not a school sport. Because WIAA does not recognized lacrosse as a sport so until WIAA changes Lacrosse will remain club.
The team has had recent success as well, they won Wesco last year, as well as made it to the playoffs, “It sucks, we put a lot of work into the program, and it feels like the school is not recognizing our hard work,” Captain Kyler Jensen said.
The teams have gotten better and better as the years go on by having their best season yet last year, “Well, I think it’s one of the more popular sports at the school, our freshman class this year is insane then the past years and the program is really growing, if we were a school sport we could really get on the map” Sophomore Grayson Michl said.
Lacrosse generates a good amount of GP attendance however a lot of students do not know that we even have a team as there are no announcements about them because they are not a school sport. “It would be nice to be represented by the school and not just booster parents,” Tanner Johnson said.
As of now GP lacrosse must pay to use GP facilities and equipment which is hard as they also do not have any school funding. “I think it should be a school sport because we could get more funding as well as better practice hours” Brady Proctor said.
With all the success the lacrosse team has had many players have felt like they deserve to be a school sport. However Lacrosse is not recognized by WIAA as a school sport which is a huge factor affecting the status of GP lacrosse. What do you think, should lacrosse stay club only or become a school sport, “I think by coming to the games and supporting the team is the best way for students to help us become a school sport” Kyler Jensen said.
Although it is not fully in our ability to make lacrosse a school sport, the more support our program can get the better chance we have of getting Lacrosse there. “WIAA does not recognize lacrosse as a school sport so there is nothing we can really do, when and if WIAA does accept lacrosse then the conversation can start to truly happen,” Athletic Director Rory Rosenbach said.
