Fear the Akron Roo

Playing Division 1 soccer has been a dream for goalie Tor Saunders, and on November 2 he committed to play for the University of Akron in Ohio. Growing up, Saunders was surrounded by soccer sand played on select teams throughout his childhood.

Saunder’s dad played semi-pro and has been a mentor for Tor through his soccer career. He played recreational ball until age 8 and then on select teams from 9 to 14. “The best select team I was on was probably Crossfire,” Saunders said. Crossfire is one of the premier select soccer teams in the state and Tor got the bulk of his goalkeeper training there. He won many tournaments with them and it will be a program he will always be proud to be a part of. Once he turned 15 he was selected to be on the Sounders academy team and his soccer career took off.

Saunders became one to watch as college scouts visited games. Memphis University invited him for a showcase last season. Saunders made the trip and Memphis cancelled on him last minute. Akron University was nearby and also wanted to take a look at his ability so he decided to visit and see what the school had to offer.”I was disappointed about the loss opportunity but saw just as much hope in Akron “Saunders said.

Following the visit, Akron became his first choice in schools. Saunders followed up with an unofficial visit this past summer and pursued a school in Ohio as well.

His next official visit to Akron was October 29 and he was able to stay on campus with other soccer players for 2 days. He loved the campus and everything about the school. He thought it was cool how the locker room was located inside the football stadium and he was able to watch film. Tor also got to watch Akron play UCLA and Akron got the win. On the last day of his visit, he decided to commit. He met with the coaches and put the pen to the contract. “I was relieved the college search was over and didn’t have to look at any other schools now,” Saunders said.

Tor started playing at the age of 3, and after 14 years he finally accomplished his goals and made it where he wants to be, playing Division 1 soccer.
