Glacier Peak has held a food drive with Maltby Food Bank since 2009 and is run by the ASB Leadership class. While the Food Drive has its own committee, the whole class goes during second period to collect the boxes in each class and keeps track of the money and food donated from each class. The committee is chaired by Mia Dunlap and Jack Swafford who quite frankly is treating the food drive with as much care as if it was his own child. He has gone as far as to make a website for the cause that will be linked here.
As of Monday, Dec. 16 Glacier Peak has raised $6,607.70 in donations, setting us $18,392.30 behind our goal of $25,000 and $22,392.3 less than what was raised last year. Percentage-wise we have raised about 26.4% of our goal which is supposed to be met by Wednesday, Dec. 18, and only 22.8% of what was raised in 2023. As for canned food, in 2023 Glacier Peak donated about one ton of food, at the moment only 36 boxes/crates have been filled so far. We haven’t even reached the amount we donated in 2009 when we began working with the Maltby Food Bank which was around $9,000.
The committee has tried very hard to make donating as easy and accessible as possible. With donations available online and at the bookkeeping office and physical donations being taken as well, going as far as to collect during sporting events like basketball quad nights, there should be no reason that we are this far from last years goal. That being said, there are 3 days left to donate to the food drive so bring and donate whatever you can. Even if it’s just a can of soup or some coins lying around your house, anything helps this cause. For people donating financially, donation matching is available at some major companies such as Microsoft, General Electric, Apple, and more. Most notably Boeing is offering a one-and-a-half match for donations. Online donations are available on the website linked on Swafford’s website and also linked here.

Garrett,
Incredible, factual reporting of our slow start this year. I am so grateful for the Leadership Class students who not only supported the committee but also supported the Food Bank in their class contributions. We, as a GP Community, really came through in the end! Your article I’m sure was a motivation to many!
