What Do You Meme?
January 26, 2018
A meme is a funny image and/or video that is passed from one individual to another via social media or text. Generally, a picture meme has a witty caption that expresses what the image portrays. There are many different types of memes, lots of them can be edgy, relate-able, or just funny looking. Another key thing about memes is most do not last long.
Tony McDaniel says, “Popular memes are not truly popular. A meme is only a good meme when it is not known to the public. For instance, resent memes such as “Do you know deh wae” or “Tide Pods” are now not funny because people have made them popular and overused. The people that ruin memes by spreading them too much are referred to, in the meme community, as normies. A classic example of a meme being ruined by normies is Rick and Morty a very popular TV show, which is now impossible of being talked about without someone ramming information about the show down your throat. Memes are a very precious thing and they should be kept discreet, away from the public view.
Lucy Dvorak says, “I think memes bring people together as a society because there could be people that you don’t talk but your friendship relies on memes. Memes keep the drive alive. My favorite memes are SpongeBob memes because I like SpongeBob. The best ways to find memes are on the Instagram explore page because you can get a personalized selection of memes based on the memes you like, and when your having a bad day you can open it up and feel better. Memes are the gift that keeps on giving,” Dvorak said.
