A half-mile ride through Main Street in Mill Creek, the Cathcart Unicycle Club displayed tricks and wore their festive Santa gear. This was the 30th year of the club participating in the Santa parade. “We have been doing it for so long now and we just keep coming back for the kids, we had our winter parade today but we are also performing at a GP Basketball game on January 24,” coach Sheila Mitchell said.
The unicycle club practices every Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Cathcart Elementary. Students from fourth to sixth grade can join but students can stay longer if they choose. Three GP students who went to Cathcart are still members today. “I have been doing unicycle for a while now, I joined in the 5 grade because a lot of my friends were doing it. It was super fun and I learned so much from everyone. I think this was the first year it didn’t rain the entire time of the parade,” junior Ella Reed said.
Brenna Klasson, a senior at GP has been a part of the club longer than most and has a special talent. “I think it’s been nine years now. I was actually afraid to join at first because I didn’t want to fall but I’m so glad I did; you do fall a lot but it’s worth it. I have a giraffe unicycle which is just like a five-foot-tall unicycle, it’s a little more dangerous and you do less tricks on it, but people think it’s cooler because you’re so high up” Klasson said.
The club used to have a lot more members but after COVID, the amount lessened. “We are always looking for new members, so if there’s anyone who has younger siblings that go to Cathcart they should differently sign up,” Klasson said.
Cathcart Unicycle Club is always a favorite at the parades and has won many awards in previous performances. They put together different routines with everyone involved, including tricks like wagon wheels, Cinderellas, and aerials. These intricate tricks can get anywhere from 40 to six people involved. Lots of the younger participants look up to the older members of the club, “I love doing the parades and dressing up my bike. I really want to be a giraffe unicycle rider because they’re super cool, I think it would be fun to just hang out up high all the time,” fourth grader Rose Bradshaw said.

Not to age myself too much, but I was there at the beginning of the Cathcart unicycle club. I am thrilled to see that it is still going strong giving these students a unique club experience. Great job Grizzlies mentoring the next generation of unicyclists.
