Martin Luther King Jr Day took place on Monday, Jan. 15, resulting in a day off from school. This break created many opportunities for students to relax and go out. Students had many plans for the long weekend, from staying in to taking trips across the state. As well as this federal holiday, the Snohomish district and many others were awarded two extra days off school due to snow and bad road conditions. “For the first four day break I just stayed in and played video games with my friends, I’m more of a relaxing type of person. And for the other days off I slept in all day which I wasn’t upset about,” Raphael Rivera said. Some students used this to their advantage to rest and have a fun time.
Along with taking a well needed rest, others went out with friends and family. During the wintry weather, it is the best time to delve into activities perfect for the cold. “I went out to Stevens Pass and snowboarded with my family for the first time in a while, it was so much fun but very chilly. For the two no-school days I just slept in of course,” Amelia Holst said. Snowboarding, a favorite here in Washington, is loved by families as a snowy essential.
Although many see this four-day weekend as a school break, the real meaning is to recognize the accomplishments of King and what he has done for our country and the world. He fought diligently against the injustices towards African Americans and sought equality among all men. He taught many people that the importance of one’s character overlooked the color of their skin. His non-violent forms of resistance inspired millions around the globe to think of one another as brother and sisters. King’s impact was so great we celebrate his bravery and philosophies to this day, with a holiday and assembly in each US school every year. He provided us with an open-minded perspective as well as a well-deserved break for all students.
