DECA Don’t Back Down

DECA is a year course with four different classes which can take you from freshman year all the way to senior, all led by Miss Alicia Sents. DECA is mainly a business class that while teaching the students how to act in a business scenario, utilizes all the class time to expand everyone’s view on business and how it can further the grasp they have on their future. At DECA conferences, all the schools in the area branch form together to compete in specific area of business. Students will pick an event listing from Entrepreneurship, Sports and Entertainment, Buying & Merchandising, etc. Most members go for a solo event or a team event with only slight differences in mainly just the amount of time to study over the situation and time to lay over the plan with the judges.

It all started with a meeting at 7:30a.m. on Jan. 7. Students gathered around in the finest attire to listen for what to expect from the day and how the day will go over. Two buses were waiting to take the students over to Lake Stevens High School where the event was being held. Pulling up in front of the school, most of the students were filed into the gymnasium for a speech from the Area 1 DECA President. At the same moment, students had to have polls for the next Area 1 President. “It was fun to express my marketing knowledge and it’ll be fun to go to state and compete again,” Sam Vanturennout said.

Sam teamed up with Bradley Clark in a team roleplay over hospitality and services and placed second. For all the students that went to compete for Glacier Peak in the Area 1 DECA conference, 32 are on their way to state ranging from all different grades. Many of the seniors have been in DECA for the past four years with most competing in these conferences before.
