The Ice Bucket Challenge first went viral in 2015, when most of us were still in elementary school. The craze took over social media, with everyone participating: celebrities, parents, teachers, and kids all taking part to speak out in support of ALS. Now, it has transformed into the Speak Your Mind Challenge. It has the same premise as dumping a bucket of water on your head and nominating your friends to do the same.
The trend resurfaced by the MIND (Mental Illness Needs Discussion) club at the University of South Carolina in partnership with the non-profit Active Minds. The club was founded by Wade Jefferson, who is a junior at USC, after a friend of his committed suicide. He created the club and has raised over $200,000 for their campaign.
So, how do people participate in the challenge? First off, you have to get nominated by someone who has already done the challenge. Once you get nominated, you have 24 hours to get a bucket, fill it with water and ice, and dump it on your head. After that, you nominate 3-5 other people to do the same. Clips of the challenge have flooded TikTok and Instagram, turning a simple act into a powerful message. It’s more than just a trend, it’s a reminder that conversations around mental health matter now more than ever. You are encouraged to donate to Active Minds in their goal to mobilize youth and young adults to transform mental health norms across society, but even the splash of cold water helps their campaign.
In a few short weeks, it has taken off all over the country, even if the trend is short-lived lived it’s a way to prove that no matter what, we are all a community. Mental health is a known challenge to many people, showing up and showing out in support just proves how many people are truly there and willing to support mental illness.
