As one of its English courses, Glacier Peak provides seniors the chance to take a class that is centered around mythology around the world. This unique course focuses on the stories and beliefs of group cultures, and how they can relate to the culture’s different factors. Often mythology stories give a supernatural explanation as to why certain events or objects exist and are of importance. Mr. Sandstrom, the Mythology teacher, starts the course strong with a familiar topic, Greek mythology. He educates the class on the Greek gods and multiple Greek hero stories. “I really like the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece because of Medea his sorceress wife. She’s just such an interesting character so I want to learn so much about her,” Caroline Mellis said.
In the beginning of the course, Mr. Sandstrom introduced all the cultures that would be discussed throughout the semester, some being Polynesian, Japanese, and Hindu mythology. This class was designed to provide the students with an understanding of the meaning of humanity over the course of time. As the only Mythology teacher, Mr. Sandstrom makes sure to prepare many versatile viewpoints to educate all the ways cultures view being human. “I’m most excited to learn about the Japanese myths just because of what I’ve already heard. They have some interesting stories with different elements, and I think it would be nice to learn about,” Abigail Hilton said.
Some students enter the course with prior knowledge of mythology, while others come in with no knowledge at all. Mythology is an easy-flowing class that new students should not feel intimidated by. There is no requirement to come into the classroom other than to be ready to engage and learn about a unique layer of every culture. “I decided to take Myth because it’s something that I knew nothing about. But I’ve always wanted to learn more about it since it is a part of a lot of people’s cultural backgrounds,” Adam Cumming said.
