Are you interested in space, or have you ever wished there was a class to learn about the cosmos? “Astronomy is such a broad field, and it’s growing super popular really fast, especially with SpaceX and all the different things. I really hope that more people take an interest in it, since it’s such an amazing field, and there are a lot of opportunities in that field,” Club President Akshara Govil said.
Many students have joined Astronomy Club, learning about the universe, and everything in it. Govil wants the club to be as engaging and interactive as she can make it. Implementing a way to immerse students in the knowledge of astronomy with activities, “My goal for Astronomy Club is to make it really accessible for everybody, even for those people who don’t know anything about the field. I aim to do as many activities as I can to make it engaging. We’ve done movies in the past, Kahoots, and crafts. I don’t want it to be more lecture-based and instead have more fun things,” sophomore Akshara Govil said. “We began this club sometime around this time last year in November, but many new students have been coming this year! I have a lot of things planned, we were thinking of doing a field trip, maybe to the Seattle UW planetarium, and inviting speakers from the Seattle Astronomical Society.”
The Astronomy Club was built from the passion and love Govil holds for astronomy and continues to pursue it through school and create a place for other students to come and learn.“My love for astronomy came from my entire family. We really love everything related to space. I originally started a couple years ago in sixth grade, I attended a summer camp for astronomy, and I was introduced to telescopes and that kind of stuff. From then on, I started watching movies and became really fascinated by the field and that is where the interest started to come up,” Govil said.
The Astronomy Club offers opportunities to learn about the vast outer space. Students can come every Wednesday to Room 101 at 2:30 p.m.
