Moving into the new school year, let’s take a look at what students are wearing this fall and winter. First off, patterned clothing has seen a spike in popularity. Cheetah print for one, in the form of patterned jeans or hoodies. But the most popular is camo print. Walking into school on any given day, one can easily spot at least five students wearing anything camo: T-shirts, hoodies, pants, and more. “I like it, and I want something with camo print on it but I’m worried that as soon as I get some, it’ll go out of style. Plus, I feel like it might get hard to style in some cases. But some of the camo prints are really cool like the white camo,” Xander Albright said.
Jeans are always trending, but the style and how you wear them changes from season to season. A type of jeans with a new silhouette has become popular: the barrel jeans. Found mostly at Free People or Urban Outfitters, this new pair of jeans is rising in popularity with its barrel-like silhouette, widening at the knees and tapering at the ankles. Mostly paired with Sambas or Uggs, these jeans can be found everywhere around campus. Speaking of jean trends, low-rise is back in style and seems to be here to stay for a while. Found in pretty much any denim store from American Eagle to Aeropostale, this “new” rise in popularity seems to give a nod to the trend of low rise sported by celebrities from the 90s to the early 2000s.
In terms of accessories that have been trending as of late, blinged-out bags are a must for fall. First popularized by the British actress and singer, Jane Birken, with her famous Birkin Bag, this trend has made its way to the mainstream, this trend of decorated purses is something anyone at home can do with no more than a trip to the thrift or the craft store. Mix a nice leather purse with some thrifted pearls or chains, and some bows made with ribbon from the craft store, and you’ve got yourself a “Jane Birken” bag.
Lastly, we’ve started to see a rise in maximalist-style jewelry, including adding colored beads to the ensemble or even mixing silver and gold pieces. In the past this has been viewed in the fashion community as a “what-not-to-do,” but stacking necklaces, rings, and earrings has been a recent trend, and this year we’ve seen much more mixing of the two tones.
