Since there is just a little over a month left until the opening for the spring musical, Newsies, rehearsals for the show have been getting busier and busier. So far, the newsies cast has gotten through all of act one and almost half of act two. “It’s good to know that we at least have that done.” Will Lemcio said, “We are probably still going to go back and nitpick things, but just having that done is really nice.”
Since beginning act two rehearsals there have been a lot of new skills required for certain dances and scenes, such as tap dancing. The opening number for act two, King of New York, requires tap dancing skills leveling from beginner tap to advance tap.
Julia Umayam, who has been practicing tap for around two years, said that she thinks King of New York has been going great. “It’s a good chance for people to showcase what they have been learning with their tap skills and we get to try new things, especially in a hard dance.” Umayam said.
The Newsies cast has also just finished all their vocals for the show, meaning the vocal captains and trainees have been very busy. Vocal captains have the important job of helping lead warmups, keeping track of vocal sections and writing down important notes for each character.
“It’s been going so great being a vocal captain trainee” Abby Savage said. “I love singing and I love helping everyone. I think it is awesome and I am so honored that I was selected to be future vocal captain because of my singing skills.”
The cast and crew are all thrilled for opening night, April 12th, and can’t wait for people to see the final product. “I’m so excited about how far we are in the musical already, it’s all coming together. Vocals, we already finished everything, and it sounds great,” Riley Lowell said. “We are already applying it to the stage and dances, it’s super fun.”
