Since the 1930’s, swing dancing has been a big hit at big events and dances. Following the old-time trend, Glacier Peak High School brought back it’s annual swing dance.
Swing dancing features all kinds of moves to coordinate with the upbeat and fast paced music. The dance included an hour session beforehand to teach swing-dancing to those who don’t know and they learned that whether you’re doing a push-pull or an outside turn, the dance can keep you going. “It was a lot of fun, five of us [wrestlers] went to one of our houses and got ready and it was a lot of fun. It’s nice to see everyone bonding at events. I’m not sure how many people I expected to be there, but I think it was a pretty good amount, it was more than expected. It was fun, [but] I didn’t really know what I was doing. I couldn’t really see the instructor, but she was doing a good job trying to teach us. I was mostly just dancing around randomly. I was able to get some moves right but just spinning was a lot of fun, and it’s fun to get dressed up like in the flowy dresses and all that,” Hannah Hader said.
Dancers can’t dance without music to accompany them and for this swing dance, it was no different. There were three lives bands and four sets included in the night featuring two of GP’s jazz bands as well as Valley View Middle School’s jazz. Jazz 1 had a set of 16 songs, split up into two performances. “It was pretty fun, making good music and dancing to good music, and seeing people enjoy it. Our performance went really well, so that was good. My favorite song was Hey Pachuco and I felt pretty good about that one. It was especially cool to see Valley View,” Emeline Radke said.
One band wasn’t enough to fill all the nights time, so Jazz 2 performed as well. Their set list was 12 songs in a single performance, ending up as one of the longer performances that night. “We played for a really long time, it felt like, so it was definitely exhausting. But it was very fun, lots of good atmosphere. [The best part was] playing all of the songs, it was just fun to see everyone dancing. [My favorite song was] probably Graze the Roof and I think I did pretty well, and the rest of the band did pretty well too. It was just a really good time,” Jenna Gould said.
